Best Nutritional Supplements For Cats- 2018

If Nutrition supplements for cats are not quite something you might think about at first when owning a cat. It’s actually not excessive care and can be quite beneficial for maintaining your cat’s health as they grow. Investing in your cat’s health WILL go a long way. Pairing that with a well-balanced diet is a powerful thing!

There are many holistic, natural, and homeopathic remedies for cats if you so choose to go this route, and why not? Cats in the wild search out herbs and plants known to help with various illnesses and ailments. If you see your cat doing this in your house trying to chew up your plants, this can be an indicator in how your cat is feeling, especially if your cat does this often.

If you want to read little more in depth about why supplements for cats are beneficial, I have written a little introductory post here.

You have the power to bring natural healing to your cat with proven effects. In this list, you’ll find a few holistic options I like as well as other supplements I’ve found to be worthwhile, and that have great reviews.

A Quick Buyer’s Guide

So where to start? First of all, there are a few types of vitamins and supplements for cats to look for:

  • Holistic Care

This can cover a broad variety health topics and remedies, so get ready.

The most popular types of holistic pet care are homeopathy and using herbal essences. You can also use Chinese herbs, and flower essences.

I want to go over homeopathy first and why it should be used in caution. I believe it works, but only if used in the right way.

    • Homeopathic remedies enhance and quicken the ways the body HEALS. Normal medical solutions counteract the way the body naturally heals, like how if you put ice on a swollen arm it slows the inflammation down- the body WANTS the inflammation because it is a part of the healing process.
    • There can be a lot of problematic issues with homeopathy. For one, there is no one “same illness.” The same applies for cats and dogs. The remedy has to be an EXACT dosage for it to work and the right blend of ingredients.

For example, arthritis cure all homeopathic remedies for pets have a chance of working, but not 100% in this case. It will take time to see what works and doesn’t work for your pet, especially if you go it alone without the help of a veterinarian certified in homeopathy. This is why a lot of veterinarians miss the point of homeopathy and don’t believe in it.

Another negative is that if used in the wrong way, homeopathy can actually suppress bigger symptoms and only mask chronic symptoms.

If you are serious about using homeopathy to help your cat, I would research a well reviewed holistic veterinarian certified in homeopathic medicine.

I believe a great alternative to homeopathy for the everyday owner are herbal essences!

    • Herbal essences basically provide nutrients that alters the way the body deals with imbalances, or they alter the environment from the inside. They can alter the pH of bacteria to slow it down! Crazy right?
    • Flower essences do almost the same, but on an emotional level. These are mostly used for anxiety and stress.
  • Vitamins and other Supplements

This is going to be your core vitamins, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, probiotics, and nutrition boosters. A lot of these aren’t necessary for your cat’s health, but will contribute overall to a more wholesome cat. It is like taking precautions for your own health. The same practice can apply to your cat.

Are you ready? Let’s take a look at the best supplements for your cat in 2018!

1. Missing Link Feline Formula

First on the list is Missing Link Feline Formula. This is a powder used to mix into your cat’s food and closes the nutritional gap between commercial foods and what nature provides. This works great especially if you are transitioning your cat into a more natural diet.

The granular powder is simply nitrogen flushed and vacuum packed to hold freshness. Missing Link is a great ALL AROUND product that provides missing nutrition. Simply that. It is a jack of all trades nutrient rich product and will provide for your cat’s overall health.

One of the best parts is that Missing Link is human grade! This means that it is suitable for humans to eat. (not that you would want to)

Nutrients include:

  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids
  • Probiotics
  • Fiber
  • Phytonutrients
  • Various vitamins and minerals

Ingredients:

Flaxseed, Rice Bran, Primary Dried Yeast, Cane Molasses, Freeze Dried Beef Liver, Sunflower Seed, Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal, Dried Carrot, Ground Beef Bone*, Dried Fish Solubles, Freeze Dried Oyster, Ground Barley Grass, Dried Kelp, Zinc Monomethionine, Lecithin, Chromium Yeast, Selenium Yeast, Niacin (Vitamin B3), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Garlic, Taurine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Thiamine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), Folic Acid, and Vitamin B12 Supplement
One thing I find interesting is the usage of Selenium Yeast… a product not “certified” for cat food, but can apparently go into a nutrition supplement. This is good, because the alternative is Sodium Selenite, basically a more toxic version of Sodium Yeast.

Using Missing Link Feline Formula will promote…

  • General Health
  • Fewer hairballs
  • Increased energy
  • Higher immune system (reduced allergies)
  • Less joint stiffness
  • Reduced Shedding

Package Size: 6 oz

Price: $12.49

Feeding Guide:
The guide states that 6 ounces is a three-month supply for an average size cat. This is exactly the size of the package.

  • Kitten to 5 lbs: 1/4 tsp
  • 5 to 9 lbs: 1/2 tsp
  • 10 to 12 lbs: 3/4 tsp
  • Over 12 lbs: 1 tsp

What I LIKED

  • Easy to use
  • Last a long time (three months!)
  • All in one powder for easy maintenance
  • Great price for what you’re getting

What I DIDN’T LIKE

  • A jack of all trades can be a bad thing- it is not good at one thing in particular and you may have to buy more products in the end when it comes to your cat’s health.

2. Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Soft Gels

Coming from a sustainable company, Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Soft Gels provides your cat with their daily essential fatty acids. I have to applaud Nordic Naturals for stating where the essential fats are derived from. The fatty acids are sourced from anchovies and sardines which are smaller. What this means is that these types of fish don’t live long enough to absorb toxins and gain other harmful PBDEs.

I went over the concerns on toxicity in fish and PBDEs in another article, which you can view HERE.

Not to mention Nordic Naturals has also released a statement about environmental toxins and fish oil, which you can also read HERE. Seeing brands have this level of concern truly makes me happy!

Nordic Naturals is also very aware of the problems of over fishing and have been personally monitoring hotspots of over fishing for the past nine years. That’s some dedication. They ensure that the fish they capture is 100% used for human consumption or animal consumption.

The Omega-3 soft gels are easy to travel with and convenient. They are measured perfectly for your cat, not humans, so you don’t have to worry about giving too much or too little.

Ingredients: Fish oil, soft gel capsule (gelatin, water, glycerin), d-alpha tocopherol (a preservative)

Guaranteed Analysis

  • 1 Soft Gel=1500 mg
  • 1 Soft Get contains 1500 mg of fish oil
  • Crude Fat (min) 67%
  • Moisure (max) 3%

  • Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids* (min) 22%
  • Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)* (min) 11%
  • Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)* (min) 7%

What I LIKED

  • Great price
  • Sustainable company
  • Aware of toxins in fish
  • Excellent fat content

  • Doesn’t specify how often to administer oil

3. Only Natural Pet Whole Food Antioxidant Blend

If you’re looking for a supplement that will boost your pet’s immune system with a different helpful effect, an antioxidant could be your cat’s meow. Only Natural Pet Whole Food Antioxidant can be just that. It is FDA approved using human grade ingredients, and made with whole foods like blackberries and blueberries, fruits commonly known for having antioxidant properties.

What an antioxidant does is fight free radical damage, which are unstable oxygen molecules. These radicals cause oxidative damage, which can decline your cat’s immune system as they age. So not only do antioxidants boost your cat’s immune system, they support healthy aging!

You can pair this with other supplements and wholesome food for your cat with excellent results.

4. Dailysure Multi-Herbal Wellness Formula

If you want to try a herbal essence approach for your cat’s immune system, then DailySure Multi-Herbal is a great option. Natural Wonder Pets’s approach is by promoting this as a “daily herbal” which I personally think is a great idea because of how conducive daily herbs can be to lifelong wellness for cats.

DailySure is unlike anything I have posted in this review so far. It has 10 daily essential herbs for cats and hundreds of phytonutrients, which are found in plants and help to prevent various diseases. The specific focus for this herbal essence is to prolong life and provide superior wellness.

But it’s just herbs. How will it benefit my cat? Well, all the herbs have a specific function. One may detoxify the liver or regulate blood sugar levels. Herbs contain vitamins and minerals, which is what you’re buying vitamins for anyways- it’s where vitamins come from! So you’re getting to the source.

5. Primalix Thyropaws For Hyperthyroidism In Cats

Natural Wonder Pets also offers herbal essences for more specific conditions in cats. A very common health problem in cats is hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid is over active.

This means that your cat will lose weight rapidly, have increased appetite (with no weight gain) diarrhea, increased shedding, and many more negative effects of a hyper active thyroid. The inflicted cat’s thyroid glands will be producing too much thyroxine.

Thyropaws aims to treat this naturally by using herbs for natural hormone modulating. This will reduce thyroxine production, and is side effect free, drug-free, and USDA approved.

Natural Wonder Pets has done it again!

The ingredients used are:

  • Bugleweed: lowers thyroid hormone activity and increases iodine absorption and availability.
  • Motherwort: calms rapid heartbeat and helps an overactive thyroid without altering normal thyroid function.
  • Lemon Balm: an antidote to stress and helps with symptoms of anxiety and sleep disorder.
  • Rehmannia Root: fortifies against the effects of stress; used for treating hormonal disorders including thyroid imbalance.

Just a quick safety note: If your cat is pregnant, nursing, or is taking diabetes medication, this may cause your cat’s blood-sugar to drop WAY too low. Both Rehmannia Root and Bugleweed lower blood-sugar levels. Do not give if your cat has under performing thyroid or is already on thyroid medication.

Package Size: 4 oz

Price: $39.95

Feeding Guide: Give by mouth, or add in food.

Kittens and cats under 5 lbs: 1 dropper twice daily

Medium Cats(6 to 12 lbs): 2 droppers twice daily

Large Cats( over 12 lbs): 3 droppers twice daily

What I LIKED

  • All natural ingredients
  • No drugs, no side effects, no BS
  • Safe and effective

What I DIDN’T LIKE

  • Again, pricey, but the outcome is worth it

6. Thorne Research Arthroplex

Arthritis and joint health is a key factor in aging animals. It determines the way your cat will live, and whether they can have easy access to everyday things, like their litter box or favorite spot to chill.

I like how Thorne Research states that their supplement for joint health is optimal because it is readily absorbed into the older animal’s intestines, which can be harder because that function may be limited in older cats. The ingredients are as pure and natural to get to that level of optimization!

Arthroplex supports that joint function by using glucosamate sulfate, a common ingredient known for healthy joint function, and various nutrients and botanicals that regulate and decrease inflammation in the joints. Unlike NSAIDS and corticosteroids, Arthroplex will aim to maintain your cat’s joints.

Arthroplex will…

  • Maintain healthy cartilage
  • Support normal inflammatory response
  • Be able to be used to alleviate soreness and stiffness

Ingredients:

  • Glucosamate Sulfate
    • Promotes joint health
    • Precursor of GAGs, an essential component of cartilage support
    • Considerable research an animal joint health has backed this important amino sugar
  • DL-Phenylalanine
    • Related to neurotransmitters that increase endorphins
  • Bromelain
    • Helps to maintain a healthy inflammatory response
  • Vitamin C
    • Enhances collagen formation and cartilage growth
    • Helps to maintain healthy cartilage

Inactive ingredients: Hypromellose (derived from cellulose) capsule, Calcium Laurate, Alaska pollock (dried skins) (Theragra chalcogramma)

Package Size: 180 capsules

Price: $34.65

Feeding Guide: 1 capsule daily for all ages and sizes. It is best to administer during or after your cat is done eating to reduce stomach upset.

What I LIKED

  • Straightforward approach to arthiritis
  • Maintains inflammatory response, not just alleviating temporarily
  • Easily absorbed in your cat’s stomach

What I DIDN’T LIKE

  • Seems a little difficult to administer without breaking the capsule open. It does not say anywhere specifically HOW to administer Arthroplex

7. Primalix Heart Hardy- Natural Medicine for Congestive Heart Failure

While not so much a “supplement,” I think this is an important one to include into the list.

Congestive heart failure is common for older cats to have. At this point in their lives, your cat’s heart health is deteriorating and as a cause of that has cardiomyopathy, which is an enlarged heart. This leads to congestive heart failure, in which fluid builds up around the heart, making the simplest actions tiring.
While you cannot cure congestive heart failure, there are many ways to alleviate the symptoms and make your kitty feel young again! Primalix Heart Hardy is one such treatment option, made once again by Natural Wonder Pets.

Paired with a lower sodium diet, this combination can work wonders with your cat. If you keep up the good nutrition and have a consistent treatment plan for your cat with CHF, your cat’s lifespan can and will increase. Don’t let CHF be a death sentence!

Primalix Heart Hardy will…

  • Promote heart muscle strength as a 100% natural cardiotonic
  • Act as a mild diuretic to reduce excess fluid retention

It is drug free with no side effects and no dietary restrictions. Only USDA approved herbs are used.

Ingredients

  • Hawthorn Berry
    • Promotes a healthy heart by increasing available energy of cardiovascular system
    • Restores a weakened heart, muscles and inflammation of the heart
  • Motherwort
    • Prevents formation of bloodclots

    • Relaxes blood vessels
  • Coleus Forskohlii

10. Bixbi Organic Pet Superfood- Digestion

A natural remedy for hairballs. Pet Superfood Digestion will help your cat’s digestive efficiency improve. This includes helping to pass hair through your cat’s digestive tract as they lick themselves, causing fewer hairs to stay in the stomach to cause hair balls.

On top of that, it’s packed with thousands of enzymes, antioxidants and immune-modulating compounds. The use of natural mushrooms, which contain plenty of B-Vitamins, will help to convert food into energy and improve your cat’s immune system.

You’ll love Digestion because it will also eliminate bad breath, loose stools, and will help with gas. It’s also certified organic by Oregon Tilth.

  • Reduces odor of stools and helps to shrink them, indicating better food conversion
  • A source of good bacteria for small intestine

  • Helps to remedy hairballs
  • Helps with gas, stools, and bad breath
  • Overall a positive experience for your cat’s immune system

In no specific order, each of these supplements for cats are important for your cat’s health, and have their own purpose. Choose wisely, and think about what is most important for your cat. Does your cat have problems with hairballs? How about anxiety? A lot of these have immune support, so that is something to think about as well.

Just think about how one effect snowballs into another, like how poor digestive tract health can lead to hairballs.

All in all, don’t be afraid to try different nutritional supplements for your cat! When it comes down to it, the fact that you are going the extra mile to care for your cat, is something special.

I hope you enjoyed my little list of supplements. Leave a comment below and say hi! Have you tried any of these or have any experience with supplements for cats?
